If you weren’t a vet, what career could you see yourself in?
I have wanted to be a Veterinarian since the 6th grade, so I never really considered any other careers. However, I love to travel so perhaps a career in the travel industry would be exciting.

What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy bike riding, reading books on the beach, skiing, and spending time with Dixie and Ichabod, my dog and my horse.

What is your favorite comfort food?
My favorite comfort food has to be pizza! It got me through all my years of school, and even now, it’s the first meal I order upon returning home from my travels.

What is your favorite vacation spot?
At the moment, my favorite vacation spot is Hawaii. It’s the land of waterfalls, whales, mountains, and ocean! Need I say more?

What is your favorite quote about animals?
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” …Mahatma Ghandi

Jennifer Mei-An Raicer

Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine

What is your favorite comfort food?
Anything involving raw fish and rice (sushi, poke…) with macarons (one “o” not two) being a close second!

If you weren’t a vet, what career could you see yourself in?
I had a difficult time choosing between Art School and Vet School! If I weren’t a Vet, I’d be a nature photographer.

What do you do in your spare time?
Favorite pastime activities include playing in dirt (aka gardening), hiking, and anything “foodie” related.

If you could give only 1 piece of advice to pet owners what would it be?
Never take a single moment for granted. Hug your pet(s) every day. And remember to laugh, even when they do something naughty. For example, what does it taste like when you mix chicken stock with vanilla soy milk? I don’t know, but you can ask my cats who decided to puncture (slaughter?) unopened cartons of each and knock them off the counter, resulting in a lovely tributary of savory and sweet.

What is your favorite quote about animals?
It’s actually my favorite quote in general…
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
– Winnie the Pooh

Colleen Wilcox

Louisiana State University College of Veterinary Medicine

If you could give only 1 piece of advice to pet owners what would it be?
If I could give one piece of advice to a pet owner, it would be trust your instincts. If you think something is off with your pet, then you’re probably right! I see your pet 1-2 times a year if they’re healthy. You live with them every day. Naturally, you know better than any physical exam, if something is wrong. And if you bring your pet in, and it turns out that nothing is wrong, at least you have peace of mind!

What has been your most rewarding moment as a veterinarian?
The most rewarding moment to me, as a Veterinarian, is when you “cure something!” The word cure is the holy grail…it’s so difficult to actually attain because it means you need to have a rock solid diagnosis to start with. In my line of work, that becomes very complicated because pets can’t talk! But in the end, if you succeed, nothing feels as good as knowing you fixed someone’s pet.

If you weren’t a vet, what career do you see yourself in?
If I weren’t a Vet, I think I would want to be a Travel Show host on TV. They get to go to fabulous places, see the best sights, and eat the best food! That would be my “dream job!” Being a Veterinarian is a close second!

What is your favorite vacation spot?
My favorite vacation spot is Central America. I love the culture, the sights and especially the food…the rice and chicken dishes they make are delicious! There is so much to see and do that for me it beats just laying on a beach somewhere. Time spent in Central America is always an adventure!

What is your favorite comfort food?
My favorite comfort food is not actually a food, but a sweet…I love dark chocolate! Nothing weak…I prefer 85% cacao and higher! Even though it’s considered bitter, I savor every bite! It’s an acquired taste that I don’t go one day without…I even pack it for vacations!

Avery Kasten

Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine

What has been your most rewarding moment as a veterinarian?
My most rewarding moment as a Veterinarian was treating a dog that had been hit by a car…he sustained a diaphragmatic hernia. His stomach was in his chest cavity and the chest was filled with gas, compressing his lungs and causing him to go into respiratory distress. He had to undergo immediate emergency surgery, but he recovered well!

If I weren’t a veterinarian, I would be a yoga instructor. I have been doing yoga for several years, and don’t feel balanced or well rested without it.

What do you do in your spare time?

What is your favorite vacation spot?

“What a beautiful world it would be if people had hearts like dogs.”
